Selling at Auction - How It Works

At The Auction House North Shields, we welcome first-time sellers and are happy to guide you through the process. Whether you're selling a single item or a full collection, we’ll help you achieve the best possible results at auction. Below is a brief guide to how it works.

Step 1: Check Our Auction Calendar

Before selling, take a look at our auction calendar to find upcoming sales and the deadlines for submitting items. You can register your intention to sell by filling out our online seller registration form or by downloading and completing the seller’s registration document then send a photo by email.

Step 2: Get a Valuation & Submit Your Items

To determine if your items are suitable for auction, choose one of the following options:

  • Home Visit for Large Collections - If you have a large number of items or bulky pieces, we can arrange a home visit to assess them. We’ll discuss how lots can be grouped and agree on any reserves before arranging delivery to the auction house.
  • Initial Phone Consultation - Unsure if your items are right for auction? Give us a call for a quick chat. If they seem suitable, you can bring them in for a final assessment.
  • Email or WhatsApp Photos - Send us clear images along with a brief description, and we’ll provide an initial assessment. If suitable, we’ll arrange a time for you to bring them in.
  • Visit the Auction House - Bring your items to our saleroom for an in-person valuation. We’ll review them, discuss auction placement, and decide how best to group them into lots.

We’ll always advise you on lot grouping, potential reserves, and auction strategy, but you can also leave these decisions to our experts.

Step 3: Selling Fees & Payment

When your item sells, a 20% commission fee is deducted from the final sale price, plus a £2 per lot listing fee. Payments are processed 20 days after the auction, once the buyer has completed their purchase. Funds will be transferred directly into your bank account.

Step 4: Attend the Auction (Optional)

Sellers are welcome to watch the auction, but due to limited space, priority seating is given to buyers. Seating and standing areas are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
