Lot 509: Late Victorian Chinese Chippendale Revival Mahogany Plant Stand 33x33x92cm
This fine late Victorian mahogany plant or display stand is executed in the Chinese Chippendale revival style, characteristic of the late 19th-century Aesthetic Movement. The piece is constructed from solid mahogany with a fine-grained surface. The square top is enclosed by an intricate, hand-cut pierced fretwork gallery. It is supported by four sets of clustered, faux-bamboo turned legs, a hallmark of the Chinoiserie influence. Structural integrity is reinforced by two tiers of elaborately shaped and pierced cross-stretchers, with the lower tier featuring a central turned finial. The craftsmanship is further evidenced by detailed hand-carved corner brackets and delicate joinery throughout. While no maker’s marks are present, the quality of the carving and the complexity of the fretwork suggest a high-end cabinetmaker of the period. Dimensions: 38 x 14 x 14 inches.
