A large size 5 ceramic mortar and pestle manufactured by Thomas Maddock and Sons. The mortar is of deep circular form with a thick rim and an integrated pouring spout, constructed from heavy stoneware intended for laboratory or pharmaceutical use. The base is slightly recessed and features the impressed marks WARRANTED ACID PROOF in two lines, accompanied by the numeral 5. The accompanying pestle features a matching ceramic head and a turned wooden handle with a rounded knob finial. The set displays an authentic aged patina with extensive staining consistent with historical chemical or apothecary use.
