Lot 138: A late Victorian framed embossed lithographed tin advertising sign for The Ocean Accident and Guarantee Corporation Ltd
A large rectangular commercial advertising sign constructed from lithographed and embossed tin-plate, mounted in a period wooden frame. The central display features the company name OCEAN in large red letters with black and cream borders. To the upper left is the text Founded 1871. The sign is divided by decorative scroll-edged shields; the left shield is inscribed in blue with Authorised Capital £1,000,000 and Subscribed Capital £420,870. The right shield contains a list of insurance products including Combined Accident & Sickness Insurance, Employers Liability and Workmens Compensation Insurance, and Fidelity Guarantees. A nautical seascape background is visible to the left, while a lighthouse is depicted to the right. The lower right section provides a telegraphic address for OCEAN, LONDON and a National Telephone number No 480 AVENUE. Regional office locations for Moorgate St. London and NEWCASTLE are displayed along the bottom edge. The reverse of the sign reveals the embossed outlines of the primary text and shields against a heavily rusted metal surface.
