Lot 149: Victor Noble Rainbird, Cullercoats, Watercolour and Pencil on Paper
A coastal scene at Cullercoats by Victor Noble Rainbird (British, 1888–1936), executed in watercolour and pencil on paper. The composition depicts a stretch of sandy beach at low tide, featuring three traditional North East fishing cobles hauled up on the shore. A prominent Cullercoats fishwife stands in the foreground, dressed in traditional attire and carrying a wicker creel on her back, while two additional figures stand near the central boat. To the left, a stone slipway leads towards the distant cliffs and buildings of North Shields. The artist’s technique employs a muted palette of ochres, blues, and earthy reds over light pencil underdrawing. The work is signed in black to the lower left VICTOR NOBLE RAINBIRD and is titled to the lower right CULLERCOATS. It is presented within a double-ruled cream mount and a molded gilt wood frame.
