Lot 639: Antique Edwardian Carved Oak Smoker's Cabinet with Hallmarked Silver Mounted Jar 41x46x18cm
An antique Edwardian oak tabletop smoker’s cabinet featuring a carved galleried top with a central floral medallion and scrolling acanthus motifs. The twin glazed doors open to reveal an interior fitted with four small drawers arranged in pairs, flanking a central arched niche. The drawers are mounted with ornate brass-tone rococo-style swing handles. Below the drawers is an open storage compartment. The interior of both doors is fitted with brass racks designed to hold smoking pipes. The cabinet stands on a shaped plinth base with a decorative scalloped apron.
Included in the central niche is a cut-glass jar with a repoussé silver lid. The lid is decorated with five cherub heads amidst clouds. The lid bears four rectangular hallmarked stamps: the first contains the initials W.D; the second contains an anchor symbol; the third contains a lion passant; and the fourth contains a lowercase letter l in a shield. A brass teardrop latch is fitted to the right-hand door.
