Lot 657: Two Items Comprising a Smiths Westminster Chime Mantel Clock and a Wooden Trinket Box

A two-piece lot consisting of a mid-20th-century mechanical mantel clock and a small decorative storage chest. The clock features a light oak-veneered case with a curved top and flared profile, supported by contrasting dark-stained feet. The circular dial has a silvered chapter ring with applied gilt Arabic numerals and a wood-grained centre. A printed black mark on the dial reads SMITHS. A brass presentation plate fixed to the lower front is inscribed PRESENTED TO N. TOOKEY FROM MANAGERS AND STAFF NO 14 DISTRICT W.H. SMITH & SON LTD 1956. The mechanical eight-day movement features five horizontal chime rods and a back plate with circular graining decoration. The movement is stamped SMITHS ENGLISH CLOCKS LTD. A brass pendulum bob is present, marked S and F. Accompanied by a metal winding key and an original paper instruction sheet titled INSTRUCTIONS FOR STARTING YOUR SMITHS WESTMINSTER CHIMING CLOCK.

The accompanying small chest is constructed from light-toned hardwood with a hinged lid. It is decorated with embossed white metal overlays depicting a trailing ivy vine against a textured ground on the lid, and stylized leaf-shaped corner brackets. The interior is unfinished wood with visible metal hinges.
