Lot 111: An Assortment of British and Commonwealth Militaria including Trench Art and HMS Ark Royal Mirror
A collection of British and Commonwealth military memorabilia, primarily from the 20th century. The group includes a First World War brass trench art shell case, hand-engraved with holly leaf motifs and geometric borders. The body of the shell is inscribed Bois d’H… 1916. The base is struck with several marks including 75 DEC, B, PD.Ps, and 205 L 16 P.
The collection features a framed display of military buttons and insignia. Visible regimental and service buttons include the Royal Engineers, identified by the initials E R under a crown surrounded by ROYAL ENGINEERS; the Royal Corps of Signals, featuring the figure of Mercury and the text ROYAL CORPS OF SIGNALS; the Royal Artillery, showing a field gun; and the Royal Air Force, with eagle and crown motifs. Other buttons present include those for the Fire Service with crossed axes, the General Service with the Royal Coat of Arms, and a United States button featuring the Great Seal eagle. Also mounted are two silver-toned NCO rank chevrons and two enameled eight-pointed star badges with red and green centers.
A rectangular etched glass mirror in a dark wood frame commemorates HMS Ark Royal. The glass is etched with the ship’s crest and a scroll bearing the motto DESIR NA REPOS. A small metal plaque mounted to the mirror reads ARK ROYAL.
Further items include a pair of vintage protective goggles with yellow-tinted lenses in dark metal frames, featuring ventilation ports and an elasticated head strap, accompanied by a distressed brown case. Completing the lot is a polished natural horn powder container with wooden end caps and a leather carrying thong.
