Lot 118: A Set of Four Heissner Lauterbacher Zwerge Terracotta Garden Figurines
A set of four West German hand-painted terracotta garden figurines depicting a trio of card-playing gnomes and a toadstool table. The group comprises three seated male gnomes in varying poses: one figure wearing a grey tunic and brown trousers leans his head on his hand while contemplating a green playing card; a second figure in a white shirt and brown vest smokes a pipe while holding a card; the third figure, in a brown jacket and blue trousers, holds an ace of hearts card and raises a closed fist. The fourth piece is a standalone red-and-white spotted toadstool, intended to serve as a central table for the group. The figures are of hollow-cast construction with open bases.
The gnome in blue trousers bears a blue and white oval adhesive paper label to the reverse printed with ‘Heissner’ in script, above ‘LAUTERBACHER ZWERGE’ and ‘MADE IN WEST GERMANY’. A second gnome in brown trousers retains a partial blue and white adhesive label to the reverse, with the legible characters ‘LAUTE’, ‘No.’, and ‘MAD’ visible on the remaining fragment. The bases of the toadstool and gnomes show red paint markings from the production process.
