Lot 431: Antique Indian Engraved Copper Alloy Pandan Box
A circular storage container and cover of heavy-gauge copper alloy, likely intended as a betel nut (pandan) box. The exterior is extensively decorated with hand-engraved and stippled figurative scenes around the base and on the domed cover, depicting figures in traditional Indian dress engaged in courtly or mythological narrative vignettes against a punch-decorated ground. The imagery is enclosed within multiple bands of stylized lotus lappet and linear geometric borders. The domed lid incorporates a raised central boss fitted with a heavy twisted rope-twist carrying handle secured by cast terminal brackets. The side is fitted with a riveted hinge and a scalloped hasp for closure. The interior retains residues of historic tinning. No maker’s marks or signatures are present.
