Lot 576: Victorian Oil on Canvas Family Group Portrait in a Park 81x69cm

A 19th-century oil on canvas painting depicting a family group within a parkland setting. The narrative composition features five primary figures: a standing man in a tan suit and bowler hat holding a cigar, a seated woman in a dark high-collared gown holding a red book, and three children. One boy is dressed in a dark sailor suit, kneeling by a pond to guide a wooden model sailboat with a string. Two young girls stand nearby; one wears a white lace dress and wide-brimmed bonnet while holding a wooden hoop, and the older girl wears a blue and white checkered cloak with a matching bonnet, carrying a small woven basket. The background landscape includes a winding path with further figures and a skyline featuring Gothic spires. The work is executed with fine attention to the textures of the period costumes and lace. The painting is housed in a bevelled gilt wood frame.
