Lot 585: Cyril Barnes Mixed Media Relief Plaque 71x41cm

A 20th-century brutalist-style mixed media relief construction on board. The composition depicts a semi-abstract architectural landscape featuring a fortified structure or castle to the left with an inset arched gateway and textured battlements. A central bridge connects to a tall building on the right, above a lower section portraying a sea with simplified sailing vessels. The work is executed with heavy impasto and built-up textural elements, likely incorporating plaster or modelling paste, using a palette of ochre, burnt sienna, and dark umber over a dark ground. The surface is finished with a distressed, weathered aesthetic. The name CYRIL BARNES is painted in white characters to the lower left of the relief. The artwork is housed in a contemporary textured gold-tone frame with a dark mount.
