Lot 599: 17th Century Style Bearded Man Portrait Oil on Panel in Ornate Gilt Frame 31x40cm
A portrait of a bearded man, executed in oil on wooden panel. The subject is depicted in three-quarter view, set against a dark, near-black ground. He is dressed in a vibrant red cloak over a dark garment, with the suggestion of a white collar. The painting employs a dramatic chiaroscuro, illuminating the face and features of the subject. The reverse of the wooden panel is reinforced with three horizontal battens. An inscription in dark ink is present on the upper batten, which includes the readable Latin text Sullanania and infaciebat. A circular paper label is adhered to the central section of the panel, though its contents are not legible. The work is housed in a substantial gilt wood and composition frame, featuring a repeating leaf-and-dart inner border, a dark-stained frieze, and foliate scrollwork to the corners.
