Lot 601: A Collection of Antique and Vintage Walking Canes and Sticks

A collection of four walking sticks and canes comprising various natural wood and handle types. The group includes a silver-mounted walking cane with a polished, dark reddish-brown tapered hardwood shaft, featuring a silver-coloured metal pommel and collar. The collar is stamped with a maker’s mark reading HP&S and bears a series of hallmarks including a lion passant, a leopard’s head, and a lowercase date letter o in a shield.

Also present is a blackthorn shillelagh with a darkly stained, thorny and knobby textured shaft terminating in an integral bulbous root-knob handle. The collection further includes a natural wood walking stick featuring a curved handle of carved light-coloured horn joined to the shaft by a carved bone or antler spacer ring, with the natural bark remaining on the shaft.

Completing the group is a single-piece natural wood cane with an integral steam-bent crook handle, featuring decorative dark tiger spotting throughout the wood. The lower end of this cane is wrapped in black tape.
