Lot 693: Carved Bone Wall Crucifix

A carved bone wall crucifix featuring a corpus figure of Jesus Christ mounted to a Latin cross. The cross is constructed from three rectangular sections of bone or ivory joined at the centre with mitered joints and a visible cross-shaped reinforcement. The material displays parallel grain lines across the vertical and horizontal members. Above the head of the figure is an incised rectangular plaque in the form of a scrolled titulus, reading INRI in capital letters. The corpus is depicted with a crown of thorns and a draped perizoma. The reverse of the cross is plain with a small circular peg protruding from the upper vertical arm.
