Lot 113: JS (1911), Seaside Whitley Bay, Watercolour and Gouache

This topographical watercolour and gouache painting on textured paper depicts a lively Edwardian seaside scene at Whitley Bay. The composition features the iconic white dome of the Spanish City building to the right, overlooking a beach crowded with figures in period attire, several striped bathing machines, and small tents. The North Sea extends to the left toward a distant headland under a pale sky. The lower right corner is signed with a hand-painted monogram JS above the date 1911. The artwork is presented in a modern light wood-toned frame behind a cream-coloured window mount. The reverse of the frame backing board bears a handwritten pencil inscription that reads SEASIDE WHITLEY BAY, SIGNED WITH MONOGRAM JS DATED 1911.
