Lot 114: William T. Wood (1877-1958) Tonalist Landscape of Dorset Oil on Board

A tonalist landscape painting by William T. Wood, depicting the rolling hills of Dorset under a wide sky with cumulus clouds. The work is executed in oil on board with textured impasto brushwork used to define the clouds and the darkened foliage of the mid-ground. The painting is presented in a modern substantial bevelled frame with a mottled metallic gold and lilac finish. The reverse of the board is signed in black ink ‘William T. Wood.’ (photo 4). Also on the reverse is an extensive handwritten biographical inscription in black ink which reads ‘PLEIN – AIR OIL (DORSET) TONALIST LANDSCAPE ATTRIBUTED WILLIAM THOMAS WOOD 1877 – 1958 ELECTED AN ASSOCIATE OF ROYAL W/C SOCIETY (RWS) 1913. FULL MEMBER 1918. FROM 1900 – 1947 . EXHIBITED 55 WORKS AT ROYAL ACADEMY. NUMBER OF ONE-MAN SHOWS LEICESTER GALLERIES NINE PUBLIC PURCHASES RECORDED’ (photo 5).
