Lot 115: A Pair of Hand-Coloured George Cruikshank Etchings, 1825

A pair of British hand-coloured etchings on paper by George Cruikshank, published in 1825. The first work, titled The Point of Honor, depicts a scene of naval discipline and is signed to the lower left margin Geo. Cruikshank fec.t with the title The Point of Honor .– to the centre; the lower right margin is inscribed London – Pub.d July 1st 1825 by Ja.s Robins & Co. Ivy Lane Pater-noster Row. The second work, titled Crossing the Line, illustrates a chaotic equator crossing ceremony and is signed to the lower left G. Cruikshank fec.t with the title Crossing the Line — to the centre; the lower right margin reads Pub.d Sept 1st 1825 by J.s Robins & Co Ivy Lane Paternoster Row. Both prints exhibit visible plate marks and are finished with period hand-colouring. They are mounted within beige card mats and housed in modern cream-coloured wooden frames. The reverse of each frame bears a handwritten inscription in black ink on the brown paper backing, one reading ORIGAL ANTIQUE OLD MASTER SAILOR ART ETCHING DATING 1825 WITH PERIOD HAND COLOURING BY GEORGE CRUIKSHANK The Point of Honor and the other reading ORIGINAL ANTIQUE OLD MASTER SAILOR ART ETCHING DATING C. 1825 WITH PERIOD HAND COLOURING BY GEORGE CRUIKSHANK Crossing the Line.
