Lot 202: A Japanese Gilded Wood Figure of Jizō Bosatsu 51cm Tall

A Japanese carved wooden figure depicting Jizō Bosatsu, the Bodhisattva Kshitigarbha. The figure is represented as a standing monk with a shaven head and elongated earlobes. The hands are positioned at the chest, cradling a cintamani, or wish-granting jewel. The robes are decorated with incised vertical lines to represent drapery folds. The figure is constructed from carved wood and finished with a gilded surface applied over a dark ground. The sculpture stands upon a stylised lotus base.
