Lot 219: A Pair of Hand-Carved Hardwood Turtle Figurines

A pair of hand-carved hardwood turtle figurines of graduated size. The figurines are crafted from a dense brown hardwood with a visible grain. Each turtle is depicted with a domed shell featuring incised lines to represent scutes, which have been detailed with black pigment for contrast. The larger turtle features a light-coloured circular inlay for the eye and incised lines to the feet. The smaller turtle has painted black dots for toes and eyes. The undersides of both pieces show visible hand-tool marks from the carving process.
