Lot 305: A Set of Lewis Chessmen Replica Chess Pieces and a Wooden Game Board

A set of thirty-two reproduction chess pieces modelled after the 12th-century Lewis Chessmen hoard found in the Outer Hebrides. The figures are cast in a weighted synthetic stone, with one side finished in a cream colour to simulate aged ivory and the opposing side in a dark charcoal tone. The set includes seated kings holding unsheathed swords across their laps, seated queens in contemplative poses, standing bishops in liturgical vestments with crosiers, mounted knights on ponies, and standing warder figures including berserkers biting the tops of their shields. The sixteen pawns are of simplified obelisk form decorated with Celtic knotwork and scrollwork patterns. The pieces are presented with a square wooden board featuring inlaid alternating light and dark wood squares within a solid wood border.
