Lot 500: George Hodgson (1847-1921) Fisherman and Children Coastal Scene Watercolour
A Victorian maritime genre watercolour on paper by George Hodgson (British, 1847-1921). The composition depicts a central figure of a fisherman or labourer in a blue knitted jumper and cap playfully lifting a young child in a white dress with red trim. They are accompanied by two young boys in rustic clothing with red neckerchiefs, one of whom is raising his hat. The background shows a seaside cottage and a beached boat on the shore. The work is signed G. Hodgson and dated 1882 to the lower right. The painting is housed in a modern gilt-wood frame with a cream-coloured mount inscribed G. HODGSON. NSA. 1847 – 1921. A fragment of a handwritten manuscript in brown ink is affixed to the verso, with text reading: you would have old Mare / well, my lady sweet / many more will hear / soon these weary feet / I’ll touch the shining rim / troubles all will end, / I shall rest in endless / Christ, the sinner’s Friend / more and more my thought / hours glad and gay, / in this lone cottage rang / noise of children’s play / let us rove in mischief / livelong summer’s day / stir the wasp in oaken.
