Lot 499: Mackenzie, E. A Descriptive and Historical Account of Newcastle upon Tyne. Mackenzie and Dent, 1827. Volume I.
A quarto-format volume titled A Descriptive and Historical Account of the Town and County of Newcastle upon Tyne, including the Borough of Gateshead, Volume I. This 1827 regional imprint is authored by Eneas Mackenzie and published by Mackenzie and Dent. The book is bound in a half-leather style with dark calf to the spine and corners, paired with marbled paper boards. The spine features five raised bands, decorative gilt floral and scroll tooling to the compartments, and a gilt-lettered leather label reading MACKENZIE’S NEWCASTLE. The edges of the text block are finished with a marbled design. The work is illustrated with several black and white engraved plates by J. Knox after drawings by J. Dobson and others, including architectural views of the New Chapel of the Hospital of St Mary Magdalen, the Improved School for Girls, the House of Recovery, and various interior church scenes. The title page carries the full imprint for Mackenzie and Dent, Newcastle upon Tyne, and lists multiple regional booksellers.
