Lot 520: A Whitefriars Amber Glass Hambone Vase
A mid-century modern amber glass vase featuring a bulbous teardrop form, commonly referred to as the ‘hambone’ shape. The piece is constructed from thick-walled blown glass using a cased technique, displaying a lighter yellow-amber interior layer visible through a deeper orange-amber exterior. The vessel tapers from a wide, rounded lower section towards a flat-ground circular rim. The base is flat-ground and polished. No signatures, factory labels, or maker’s marks are present on the glass itself. The vase is accompanied by a handwritten paper note in black ink that reads WHITEFRIARS AMBER TEARDROP OR HAMBONE VASE 1965 BY GEOFFREY BAXTER. The form is a documented design by Geoffrey Baxter for Whitefriars, introduced in the mid-1960s as model 9557.
