Lot 577: A 1916 British military brass variable power gunsighting telescope by W. Ottway and Co Ltd
A First World War period military gunsighting telescope constructed of heavy gauge brass. The instrument features a long cylindrical main tube with a side-mounted protrusion and a variable magnification eyepiece. The brass body is incised with the maker name W. OTTWAY & CO LTD EALING. Other incised markings include GUNSIGHTING. PATENT V.P. and the date G. 1916. G. A British military broad arrow (pheon) symbol is stamped next to the marks NO 16 and II. Two knurled rings allow for adjustment, stamped with settings 5 to 15 and 5-15, alongside the instruction TURN TO FOCUS. Numerals 7, 9, and 13 are stamped at intervals on the brass adjustment rings. The objective end has a recessed glass lens.
