Lot 576: A Stanley London brass Brunton-style clinometer compass
A solid brass surveying clinometer compass of Brunton pattern. The instrument is constructed with an octagonal brass housing and a hinged lid. The exterior of the lid is fitted with a rectangular brass plate secured by four screws, which bears an engraved grid of numbers under the heading NATURAL SINE and is engraved at the base STANLEY LONDON. Internally, the lid contains a circular mirror with a central vertical sighting wire. The main compartment contains a compass with a 360-degree scale and a clinometer mechanism featuring a weighted pendulum arm and two spirit levels, comprising one circular bullseye level and one tubular level. The compass dial is engraved in script with Stanley below the North pointer and London above the South pointer. A folding brass sighting arm with a central peep hole and graduated tip is attached to the side of the housing opposite the lid hinge.
