Lot 575: An Assortment of British and Commonwealth WWII Period Militaria Including a T. G. Co Ltd Compass
An assortment of British and Commonwealth military equipment and collectables from the Second World War period. The collection includes a Mark 1 magnetic marching compass manufactured by T. G. Co Ltd. The unit is housed in a black bakelite case with a hinged lid containing a sighting wire and a mirror for taking bearings. The interior features a rotating bezel and a luminous dial marked 0-35 with N, E, S, and W cardinal points. The underside of the case is impressed with the text COMPASS. MAGNETIC MARCHING. MARK 1. followed by a Broad Arrow property mark, the serial number B186740, and the maker name T. G. Co LTD.
The collection also features a large, tapered brass shell casing dated 1939. The base of the casing is stamped with the characters 39, 18K, P490, and XM, accompanied by a Broad Arrow property mark.
Also included is a group of inert small arms ammunition and spent casings. A complete .303 caliber round is present, featuring a headstamp that reads .303 WRA 1941, indicating manufacture by Winchester Repeating Arms in 1941. The lot further contains a commercial pistol casing with a headstamp reading .357 MAGNUM, various other spent brass casings, and a single lead projectile. All ammunition components are sold as inert, deactivated collectables.
The lot is completed by a three-bar rank chevron for a British Army Sergeant. The insignia consists of three chevrons embroidered in khaki thread on a dark wool backing, showing evidence of having been removed from a uniform tunic.
