Lot 613: A Pair of Wooden Collectibles Comprising a Folding Chess Set and a Carved Cigarette Dispenser

A pair of wooden collectibles consisting of a folding chess set and a carved cigarette dispenser. The chess set comprises a folding wooden box that opens to reveal an inlaid checkerboard of alternating black and natural wood squares. The box is secured by two brass-tone metal latches and features a continuous rear hinge. The interior is lined with green felt and contains a set of Staunton-pattern turned wood chess pieces in natural and ebonised finishes. The cigarette dispenser is hand-carved from a dark hardwood in an Anglo-Indian style. The exterior decoration depicts an elephant amongst foliate and leaf motifs in high relief. The box contains a tiered folding internal mechanism with numerous cylindrical holes designed for cigarette storage and dispensing. No maker’s marks, signatures, hallmarks, or labels are visible on either item.
