Lot 130: A Collection of Works on Paper by Victor Noble Rainbird 42x30cm frame 33x21cm picture

This collection of works by Victor Noble Rainbird (British, 1888–1936) consists of one framed landscape and four unframed printed sketches. The central work is a landscape executed in watercolor, pen, and ink on toned wove paper. It depicts a river scene with slender trees in an impressionistic style using a palette of soft blues, greens, and ochre. The work is signed in the lower left corner in blue-grey paint VICTOR·NOBLE·RAINBIRD! and titled in the lower right L’AUTUMNE: SOMME. It is presented in a beaded gilt-wood frame with a wide cream mount. Accompanying the watercolor are four gestural pen and ink printed sketches on cream paper. Each sketch is signed and titled in the artist’s hand: the first is titled CULLERCOATS·BAY and signed VICTOR NOBLE·RAINBIRD; the second is titled ·TYNE·HARBOUR· and signed VICTOR·NOBLE·RAINBIRD; the third depicts a harbour scene with a lighthouse and is signed VICTOR NOBLE RAINBIRD; the fourth is titled ·TYNEMOUTH·ABBEY· and is signed and dated VICTOR NOBLE·RAINBIRD/1934. These ink drawings employ a calligraphic line with dense cross-hatching to define shadows and structures.
