Lot 164: Gothic Style Cast Iron Free Standing Fire Basket with Relief Backplate

A free-standing fire basket of cast iron construction in the Gothic style. The decorative backplate features an integral circular relief medallion depicting a group of four figures in 17th-century dress within a tavern-style interior scene. The basket is formed by vertical pickets with pointed spear-shaped tops, interconnected by two horizontal rails set with raised square bosses at the junctions. The front corner posts are surmounted by turned finials. The unit is supported on four shaped legs. Internally, the grate is fitted with a removable black metal front plate and a base containing two parallel perforated rectangular burner tubes. The surface of the casting is textured throughout. No maker marks or foundry stamps are visible.
