Lot 163: A Shadow Box Diorama of the RMS Titanic 107x33x9cm
A wall-hanging shadow box maritime diorama featuring a three-dimensional half-hull relief model of the RMS Titanic. The model is constructed with a black hull, a red lower section, and a tan upper deck with four funnels and two masts featuring black rigging. The ship is set against a dark green textured fabric background within a rectangular wooden frame under glass, finished with a gold-painted decorative inner border.
The interior contains various commemorative elements mounted on metallic plates, including a reproduction of the New York Times front page from April 1912, a Titanic passenger list, and various photographs depicting the Grand Staircase, the ship at sea, and scenes from the disaster. A relief-moulded lifebuoy is positioned at the lower right, finished in cream and red with an anchor illustration.
The model features several painted inscriptions: the stern is marked TITANIC LIVERPOOL in gold lettering, and a central black and gold nameplate below the hull reads TITANIC 1912. The lifebuoy is inscribed TITANIC CAPT. E. J. SMITH and features the numbers 12, 19, and 21. Two informational plates at the base provide historical details: the left plate describes the ship anchored off Roche’s Point, Queenstown, Ireland on April 11, 1912; the right plate lists technical specifications including a length of over 850 feet, a displacement of 66,000 tons, and a capacity of 2,223 passengers and crew.
