Lot 255: An English Thetford Norfolk Pulp Ware black lacquered bowl with colonial Indian scenes

An English black lacquered pulp ware bowl of deep form featuring a scalloped rim. The exterior is decorated with two primary transfer-printed and hand-tinted medallions reflecting British colonial iconography of South Asia. One medallion depicts a ceremonial elephant wearing a howdah and carrying two figures under a yellow parasol within a landscape. The second medallion shows a female figure in a red and orange sari picking tea leaves in a plantation, with a large wicker basket on her back. Both vignettes are framed by circular borders of white blossoms and green foliage, with similar floral sprays distributed across the body of the bowl. The interior is finished in a uniform black lacquer. The base bears a gold-stamped circular mark with an outer ring reading THETFORD NORFOLK PULP WARE and a central section reading 130 USEFUL ARTICLES MADE IN ENGLAND positioned above a small horizontal arrow symbol.
