Lot 317: A Set of Five Victorian Brass Bell and Knob Weights circa 8kg

A set of five cast brass weights comprising four bell-style weights with loop handles and one smaller knob-top weight. The weights are constructed from yellow metal with recessed lead adjustment plugs in the bases. The largest weight features an engraved numeral 4 and the letters lb on the top of the handle.

The shoulder of the largest weight bears an impressed crown symbol above the letters VR. Below this are the stamped numerals 30, 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6. A further small rectangular stamp is present on the shoulder containing a crest symbol which is not clearly legible. The base of this weight is stamped 04 at the top with the lead plug also bearing a stamped 04 and a small device. The characters 1500, 0125, and 978 are impressed into the brass surrounding the plug.

The base of a smaller weight features a lead plug impressed with a crown symbol above the numerals 525, positioned next to a vertical rectangular stamp containing the numerals 112 above a small circular mark. The smaller knob-top weight lacks the verification marks found on the larger examples and is solid in construction with a threaded or plugged aperture to the base.
