Lot 325: A Collection of Stereoview Cards, Postcards, and British First Day Covers in a Vintage King George Chocolates Box
A large collection of paper ephemera and philatelic covers, primarily 19th and 20th century. The collection is housed in a rectangular cardboard confectionery box with a brown exterior and a green flock-lined interior. The lid is printed in white with a royal warrant crest above the text King George CHOCOLATES and J.S. Fry & Sons, Ltd. Bristol, Eng.
The assortment includes several stereoview cards. Three cards bear the embossed margin text S. R. STODDARD, PHOTO., GLENS FALLS, N.Y. with views of mountain landscapes and a forested clearing. Other stereoview subjects include a lakeside pavilion with figures, a nursery interior with a child, and an interior view of Chatsworth House, the latter bearing the printed mark ROTARY PHOTO, E.C. and captioned 30017 H CHATSWORTH. STATE BEDROOM WITH CORONATION CHAIR OF GEORGE III & QUEEN CHARLOTTE (1760).
A group of postcards is present, featuring art reproductions such as Georges Seurat’s Bathers at Asnières and a portrait of a noblewoman, alongside topographical and scenic views.
The philatelic portion of the lot consists of numerous British Post Office First Day Covers, largely dating from the 1970s. These include commemoratives for Dickens & Wordsworth (1970), IXth British Commonwealth Games Edinburgh (1970), Christmas (1970), Ulster ’71 Paintings, European Communities (1973), Turner 1775-1851 (1975), and Direct Elections to the European Assembly (1979). Notable among these is the experimental Charity Stamp issue postmarked 22nd January 1975.
