Lot 516: A Victorian metal mounted and painted oak slat steamer trunk
A late 19th or early 20th-century Victorian industrial utility style steamer trunk. The chest is constructed from wooden planks, likely pine, covered in a heavy-duty painted canvas cloth. The exterior is reinforced with horizontal oak slats and finished with black-painted metal banding and corner brackets. The trunk features a distinctive decorative scheme with vertical and horizontal bands painted in yellow, secured by numerous metal rivets. Hardware includes a large black-painted iron central lock plate with a spring-loaded latch, flanked by two ornate cast-metal flip latches. A single brass-toned metal bale handle is mounted to the front face. The base is fitted with decorative cast-iron feet at the corners. The interior reveals simple plank construction with three metal hinges and a lid stay to the left side. The interior wood bears several handwritten notations in graphite or charcoal. The underside of the lid is marked 7 8 9 above P L O. The interior base is marked 9 7 8 above B B T. No manufacturer labels or maker marks are present.
