Lot 521: Sunderland Pink Lustre Earthenware Mariners Compass Jug
A 19th-century Sunderland-style pink lustreware jug of bulbous form, crafted in earthenware with a creamware body. The jug features a flared rim with a pinched spout and a simple scrolled loop handle. The exterior is decorated with black transfer-printed designs and hand-applied pink splash lustre glazes. One side displays a detailed Mariner’s Compass rose with a central eight-pointed star and a fleur-de-lis indicating North, flanked by two multi-masted sailing vessels. The opposite side is printed with a religious verse titled The Lord is my Shepherd, enclosed within a floral sprig border. The text reads: The Lord is my Shepherd my / guardian and guide / Whatsoever I want he doth / kindly provide / Ever since I was born it is / that hath crown’d / The life that he gave me / blessings around.
The lower edge of the compass transfer print bears a black printed mark containing a capital P followed by the word Newcastle. Below this, further characters are present but are not legible. The interior is finished in a plain white glaze, and the pink mottled lustre decoration extends around the collar, rim, and shoulders of the vessel.
