Lot 522: A Moroccan Mixed Media Casket and an Egyptian Style Figurine

This lot consists of a small domed-top chest and a seated scribe figurine. The chest is constructed with a wooden carcase overlaid with a combination of white bone plaques and white metal sheeting. The metalwork features repoussé and chased foliate and beaded borders. The bone plaques are incised with dark scrolling paisley-style motifs. The lid is set with two reddish-brown cabochon stones. The interior is lined with hand-painted paper featuring red, yellow, and black geometric and tribal patterns, including cross-hatching and triangular designs. The metal feet bear an incised mark consisting of the characters G and M followed by an illegible squiggle. The base shows exposed dark-stained wood.

The second item is a figurine of a seated scribe, carved from a material with a yellowish patina. It is styled after the Old Kingdom Seated Scribe. The base is incised around the perimeter with Ancient Egyptian style hieroglyphs, including a bird profile and a seated figure. The top surface of the base bears an incised mark reading L J.
