Lot 549: A Group of Five Hand Carved Wooden Elephant Figurines

A collection of five hand-carved wooden elephant figurines, appearing to be a family group. The assortment includes four figures carved from a dense, dark hardwood with a visible grain, and one medium adult elephant carved from a contrasting reddish-brown wood with swirling marbled grain. The two largest elephants and the two smaller calves feature naturalistic skin folds and musculature. The larger dark wood figures are inset with pale, cream-coloured material for the eyes and tusks, likely bone or horn, and have similarly inset toenails on the front feet. The reddish-brown adult is carved with recessed sockets at the base of the trunk. There are no maker’s marks, signatures, or labels visible on any of the figurines.
