Lot 664: An Afghan Baluch Hand-Knotted Wool Prayer Rug 3ft x 4ft 8"

A hand-knotted Afghan Baluch wool prayer rug featuring a central field with a large, stepped hexagonal medallion in terracotta and mustard yellow tones against a dark indigo ground. The medallion is densely populated with geometric motifs, while the surrounding field and spandrels incorporate stylized bird figures and smaller geometric filler patterns. One end of the field is decorated with architectural prayer rug motifs, including two stylized mihrab arches and minaret-style forms. The rug is enclosed by multiple decorative borders, the primary border composed of repeating eight-pointed star flowers on a camel-coloured ground. The rug is finished with short, light-coloured wool fringes at both ends. The reverse shows the hand-knotted construction with visible warp and weft. No maker’s marks, signatures, or inscriptions are visible on the front or reverse of the piece.
