Lot 114: Antique Victorian Pyrography Decorated Oak Spinning Chair
A Victorian three-legged spinning chair of traditional knock-down construction. The chair is crafted from oak, featuring a tall, narrow backboard that slots through a central rectangular mortise in the hexagonal seat. The backboard is secured by a tapered friction-fit design, allowing the piece to be easily disassembled for transport. The surfaces are extensively decorated using pyrography, or poker-work, with a stippled, charred ground providing a dark background for the natural wood designs. The backboard features a stylized winged dragon or serpent positioned beneath a small double-headed heraldic eagle, with a keyhole-shaped carrying handle cut through the upper section. The seat is similarly decorated with a large heraldic eagle with spread wings and a central crown. The edges of the seat and back, as well as the three turned legs, are textured with rhythmic, hand-gouged notches.
