Lot 191: A Hand-Carved Hardwood Elephant Figure 20x23cm

A hand-carved hardwood elephant figure, likely Kadam wood, featuring extensive relief and chip carving across the entire body. The animal is depicted in a standing posture with its trunk curved downwards and slightly back towards the front legs. It is adorned with ceremonial caparisons, including a saddlecloth decorated with a central floral medallion surrounded by dense scrolling foliage and geometric borders. Further decorative elements include a beaded collar, an ornamental headpiece, and textured ‘scales’ along the spine. The large ears are detailed with deep linear grooves. The wood possesses a natural grain and a warm honey-coloured patina, with darker staining visible on the trunk and forehead. There are no maker’s marks, signatures, or labels visible on the figure.
