Lot 399: A Pair of Vintage Wooden Tennis Rackets and Presses
Two vintage wooden tennis rackets, each accompanied by a period timber racket press.
The first racket features an ash laminated frame with gut strings and a natural wood handle. The handle is notable for a bulbous fishtail pommel with vertical grooving. The throat area is reinforced with red and black string binding. A shield-shaped adhesive decal is applied to the throat, featuring a red horned figure and the readable characters IMP. It is accompanied by a trapezoidal wooden press secured with four metal screws.
The second racket has a cream-painted frame shoulder with gut strings. The handle has a black leather grip wrap and a leather butt cap embossed with the text WHEN NOT IN USE PLEASE KEEP IN A PRESS. The throat bears a rectangular red and black adhesive label reading Carboro. Handwritten in black ink on the handle is the name A. HUNTER, which corresponds with the name AUDREY HUNTER written on the accompanying rectangular wooden press. This press features metal wing-nut tensioners and springs at each corner.
