Lot 409: 19th Century Oil on Canvas Portrait of a Bearded Man in Ornate Gilded Frame
A 19th-century oil on canvas portrait of a bearded man, executed in the Baroque style. The subject is depicted half-length in a three-quarter pose, dressed in dark garments that blend into a shadowed, atmospheric background featuring a faint circular motif behind the head. The artist has used expressive brushwork for the facial features and the texture of the grey-toned beard.
The reverse of the canvas features a central printed black ink stamp reading WINSOR & NEWTON, 38 RATHBONE PLACE, LONDON. The canvas is secured to a wooden stretcher with four corner keys.
The painting is housed in a heavily ornate, gilded wood and composition frame. The frame is decorated with deep-relief scrolling acanthus leaves, C-scrolls, and central fleur-de-lis motifs at the rails and corners. An aged square paper label is adhered to the top rail of the frame reverse, featuring the handwritten characters No III over 407 with a horizontal underline.
