Lot 439: A trio of Chinese pottery vases in the Satsuma style
A three-piece garniture set comprising a large central vase and two smaller flanking vases, decorated in the Satsuma style. Each piece is constructed from cream-coloured earthenware with a crackled glaze, featuring hand-painted enamels and extensive gilded highlights. The central decorative panels depict figural scenes of women and children in garden landscapes, one notably featuring a figure carrying a flower basket. These panels are surrounded by dense borders of peonies, chrysanthemums, and butterflies against a dark ground. The vases are further embellished with raised moriage dotting to the shoulders and necks. The smaller vases are fitted with two gilded lion-dog mask handles.
The base of each smaller vase bears a red stamped diamond-shaped mark featuring an upper circular device above illegible characters, with block lettering reading MADE IN CHINA at the bottom. The larger vase has a partially visible red square seal mark to the base, which is too worn to be legible.
