Lot 589: Mixed Media Street Scene with Figures and Sparrows 48x64cm

A mid-20th-century expressionist mixed media painting on stretched canvas, depicting a complex urban street scene. The composition features multiple overlapping figures in varying degrees of transparency, including several spectral, ghost-like forms in the foreground. Central to the work is a street performer playing a flute in a blue coat, positioned near a figure in a bright yellow outfit. To the left, a large semi-transparent figure appears to be playing a violin. The street is populated with further pedestrians and two period vehicles, a blue estate car and a red saloon. Commercial signage is integrated into the background, including a notice reading LEASE FOR SALE APPLY SMITHS, a window with the text TURF ACCOUNTANT, and a street vendor stall marked HOT CHESTNUTS. In the lower foreground, three small, realistically rendered sparrows are depicted pecking at white crumbs on the pavement. The work is signed Shaul in the lower right corner. The canvas is housed in a simple, mid-century style wooden frame.
