Lot 59: A Trio of Sterling Silver Vesta and snuff box gross circa 39g
A trio of sterling silver cases comprising two vesta cases and one sovereign case/snuff box.
The first vesta case is of oval form, featuring chased foliate and scrollwork decoration across both sides, centring on a vacant diamond-shaped cartouche. It is fitted with a hinged lid, a suspension loop to the side, and a serrated striking plate at the base. The interior rim bears an impressed maker’s mark CES in a three-lobed cartouche, alongside a lion passant, a three-part symbol in a shield, and a date letter U.
The second vesta case is of rectangular form with rounded corners. The exterior is decorated with an engraved floral and foliate spray to one corner, separated from a plain polished field by a curved dotted border. It features a hinged lid, a suspension loop, and a serrated striking plate at the base. The interior rim shows a partially legible maker’s mark W J H, an anchor symbol, a lion passant, and a date letter b.
The snuff box is of rounded rectangular form with a plain, polished exterior with a mirror. The interior is finished with a gold-wash gilding. The gilded interior is stamped with a maker’s mark C & N, an anchor symbol, a lion passant, and a date letter.
