Lot 592: Daniel Johnston, Captain America and Surreal Imagery 46x54cm

The surrealist composition features a central heroic figure in the likeness of Captain America with green-tinted skin, surrounded by a variety of idiosyncratic motifs including a large orange one-eyed creature, a multi-eyed floating die, a red skeletal head within a yellow burst, and numerous wavy lines and smiley faces. The drawing is punctuated by several handwritten phrases in black ink including QUEENIE WAS A DOG, THAN SHE WAS A GOD, ZUTTON, NOW SHE IS MY LOVE, BEST DOG IN THE WORLD, and FOREVER IT IS GROOVY.

The work is signed lower right in black : ★ Daniel Johnston ★. Additionally, a small green printed or stamped graphic of a multi-eyed frog, a signature motif of the artist, appears in the lower left margin and includes a miniature printed signature reading Daniel Johnston. The drawing is presented in a white mat and housed within a modern brushed silver-tone frame.
