Lot 741: A Middle Eastern Repoussé Metal Clad Folding Book Stand and a Jewelled Textile Belt
A two-part lot comprising a folding book stand and a decorative belt. The book stand, traditionally known as a rehal, is constructed with a wooden core entirely encased in chased and embossed white metal. The exterior surfaces are decorated with dense, scrolling foliate and floral repoussé patterns. Each of the lower legs is set with a central cabochon; one features a brownish-red carnelian stone, and both are encircled by small turquoise-coloured beads. The stand is hinged to fold flat.
The accompanying decorative belt is made from a cream-coloured ribbed textile base. It is heavily embellished with metallic hardware, purple glass cabochons, and faceted metallic studs. The three-part metal clasp is set with marquise-cut purple glass stones and finished with intricate wirework and small metallic beads. The body of the strap features further marquise-cut purple glass cabochons in serrated metal mounts, interspersed with rows of faceted studs. No maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on either item.
