Lot 742: John Falconer Slater 1857 -1937, Impressionist Landscape with Rocky Stream 72x57cm

This Impressionist landscape drawing is executed in pastel on paper, depicting a rocky stream cascading through a wooded valley. The composition features large grey boulders in the foreground and a fast-flowing stream rendered with energetic blue and white strokes. The surrounding woodland is captured with a textured application of greens, oranges, and yellows, suggesting an early autumn setting, with touches of pink and white denoting blossoming shrubs to the left. The artist uses a rapid, gestural technique to illustrate the play of dappled light across the foliage and water under a bright sky. The work is signed Slater in the lower left corner (photo 3). It is housed in a decorative gilded wooden frame featuring a repeating foliate scroll pattern.
