Lot 557: UK 1953 Elizabeth II Coronation Specimen Coin Set
A complete ten-coin specimen set from the United Kingdom, struck to commemorate the coronation of Elizabeth II in 1953. The collection comprises a cupro-nickel five-shilling Crown, a Half Crown, a Florin (Two Shillings), two Shillings featuring English and Scottish heraldic crests respectively, and a Sixpence. The base metal denominations include a dodecagonal nickel-brass Threepence, a bronze Penny, a Halfpenny, and a Farthing. The reverse designs include the Tudor rose, thistle, shamrock, and leek on the larger denominations, with a Tudor portcullis on the threepence, seated Britannia on the penny, the Golden Hind on the halfpenny, and a wren on the farthing. Most pieces include the Latin inscription FID DEF. The set is presented in its original dark brown leatherette case with a velvet-lined base and silk-lined lid. The exterior lid features a gold-stamped three-line inscription reading 1953 ELIZABETH II CORONATION SPECIMEN SET and a small gold stylised symbol resembling a downward-pointing sword in the lower-left corner.
